Young Democrats Push Left as Older Voters Urge Moderation
While most Democrats say the party has the right ideas, sharp divisions remain over ideology and how to win future elections
The internal battle among Democrats over the direction of their party continues unabated, with new polling suggesting the party could not be more divided.
A new Lord Ashcroft poll found that 46% of Democrats say the party should be more liberal and push for more progressive policies and candidates on the ballot. On the flip side, 41% say the party should be more moderate, pushing more centrist policies and candidates instead, while another 13% are unsure.
Younger Democrats, those between 18–24 years of age, are overwhelmingly of the view that the party should be more liberal at 60%, while those over 65 were more likely to say the party should be more moderate at 53%.
Black Democrats were more likely to say the party should be more liberal at 49%, compared to 48% among Hispanics and 44% among white voters. Conversely, 44% of white Democrats say the party should be more moderate, compared to 40% of Hispanics and 37% of black voters.
