The Stunning Spread of Conspiracy Theories
Child trafficking rings, secret cabals, and political plots, Americans are buying into these ideas in droves
New polling from YouGov is highlighting just how much conspiracy theories have taken hold in the minds of many Americans, from child sex trafficking rings to staged assassination attempts. Let’s take a dive into these theories and see who exactly is on side with each one.
For theory number one, there is the idea that the assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania was staged in order to help him win the 2024 election. Of respondents, 34% say they believe that is true, while 52% say it is false, and another 14% are unsure.
Democrats were much more likely to say it is true at 57%, with even 35% of independents agreeing. Unsurprisingly, only 10% of Republicans believe it was staged to help him, while 79% say it is a false idea.
Those who agree with the theory range from 30 to 39% depending on the age bracket, though older Americans were much more likely to say that the theory is false.
Related to the Butler shooting, the poll then asked whether Americans believe Crooks, the shooter, acted alone in the assassination attempt. Of respondents, 48% say he did not act alone, with 58% of Republicans and 46% of independents agreeing. Even 40% of Democrats say they believe Crooks did not act alone.
Only 21% of Americans say this theory is false, while a sizeable portion of Americans (31%) say they are unsure whether the idea holds merit in their eyes.
