New polling shows major concerns over job loss, deepfakes, and lack of regulation
New polling conducted by YouGov finds that many Americans have reservations about artificial intelligence (AI), with concerns growing as the technology advances.
The survey asked Americans whether they believe AI’s effects on society will be positive or negative. A plurality (47%) said AI will negatively impact society, while just 26% believe it will have a positive effect. Another 16% were neutral, and 11% were unsure.
Democrats are slightly more likely than Republicans to expect negative societal impacts, at 50% to 46%, respectively.
It’s no surprise, then, that an overwhelming majority of Americans (71%) believe there should be more regulation of AI than currently exists.
Democrats were more likely than Republicans or Independents to support additional AI regulation, though all three political groups had the same share (5%) saying there should be less regulation.
The survey also looked at how Americans view AI’s impact on employment and its potential to cause catastrophic problems for humanity down the road.
