Polls Say Voters Will Blame Republicans For A Shutdown
Majorities across party lines say lawmakers should cut a deal, not shut it down
With a government shutdown looming ahead of tonight’s deadline, everyone is wondering whether the Democrats and Republicans will come to a funding agreement like they did earlier this year.
For Democrats, they have to show their own base that they are willing to take on their political opponents, rather than rolling over like Chuck Schumer did earlier this year. Meanwhile, Republicans are doing everything they can to pin a potential government shutdown on the Democrats, going so far as to argue the Democrats only want a shutdown to give illegal aliens healthcare (not true, but you knew that).
So what does the polling around the issue say?
Siena asked whether Democrats should or should not shut down the government if their demands are not met by Republican leadership. Among all voters, 27% said they should shut down the government, while 65% say they should not.
Among Democratic voters, a slim plurality (47%) say the party should shut down the government, while 43% oppose the idea. An even larger majority of independents oppose the idea of a government shutdown, with 59% saying as much, while only 32% are in support.
Those who disapprove of Trump’s job as president are split evenly at 45% apiece, while those approving of his job are overwhelmingly opposed to a shutdown caused by the Democrats at 90%.
