Newly released polling from Data For Progress finds many New York City Democrats would strongly support candidates that take a hardline against Israel, while also showing increasing levels of support for the Palestinian people in their conflict against Israel.

Firstly, the survey asked NYC Democrats how favorably they view a number of local and national figures, with the likes of Bernie Sanders and AOC reaching favorables as high as 79 percent and 75 percent, respectively. Mamdani and Lander are both tied at 68 percent favorability, though Mamdani’s unfavorables are higher at 26 percent.

However, Mamdani’s unfavorables pale in comparison to Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams, who are widely unpopular with NYC Democrats, sitting at 56 percent and 81 percent unfavorable, respectively. Only Donald Trump is more unfavorable than Eric Adams at 92 percent.

The survey quickly switches gears towards the Israel-Palestinian conflict, with the data showing just how much the Democratic base in the city opposes the Israeli efforts overseas.

The survey found 67 percent of NYC Democrats say their sympathies lie more with the Palestinians than the Israelis, of whom only 16 percent said their sympathies lie with the latter.

That much tracks, given an overwhelming majority of respondents (78%), say they believe Israel is currently carrying out a genocide against the Palestinian people living in Gaza, while only 13 percent said that is not the case.

As the survey goes on to show, Democrats are much more willing to side with those candidates who take on the Israeli lobby while punishing those who side with them.
