GOP Support for Same-Sex Marriage Plummets as Americans Hold Steady at 68%
Gallup shows GOP support for same-sex marriage falling, while Democrats hit record high
The latest polling from Gallup on same-sex marriage suggests that the Republican Party's culture war against the LGBTQ+ community—transgender individuals in particular—is taking its toll on its own members.
The poll, which asked whether Americans believe same-sex couples should have the legal right to have their marriages recognized, finds that 68% of Americans still agree. That’s only a 1% drop, statistically insignificant, but the decline is largely driven by a staggering shift among Republican respondents.
The share of Republicans who believe same-sex marriages should be valid has dropped to 41%, down five points from last year. This marks the third consecutive year of decline in GOP support, falling from a high of 55% in 2022.
Meanwhile, support among Independents rose two points from last year, and Democrats reached a new high of 88%, up five points from 2024.
Let’s break down these numbers further.
