Fewer Americans Feel Patriotic This July 4th
Democrats, youth, and college grads driving sharp decline in national pride
New polling from Gallup ahead of the July 4th weekend finds that the share of Americans who are proud to be American has slipped over the past year.
The share of Americans who say they’re extremely proud remained stable at 41% compared to this time last year. However, the share who say they’re very proud has dropped nine points to 17%, while those who are moderately proud ticked up to 19%.
Consequently, the share of Americans who say they’re only a little proud rose to 11%, while those who are not proud at all to be American increased to 9%.
The decline in American pride is driven by Democrats and Independents, while Republicans remain relatively stable on this metric.
Compared to 2021, the share of Democrats who have little to no pride has risen from 12% to 36%, while Independents ticked up from 14% to 22%.
Republicans are the only partisan group where the share of Americans saying they’re extremely proud to be American has risen, moving from 64% to 77% over the past four years.
Let’s dive a little deeper into the data and see how other groups are shifting on this front.
