Democrats Surge in New Jersey as GOP Vote Share Crumbles Nationwide
Primary turnout and special elections signal trouble ahead for Republicans
On Tuesday, voters in New Jersey headed to the polls for the state’s gubernatorial primaries. While Sherrill and Ciattarelli won their respective nominations for the Democratic and Republican parties, the more notable story was the voter turnout.
According to the unofficial count, over 786,000 Democrats voted in the primary compared to just 454,900 Republicans. That’s an increase for both parties compared to the 2021 primaries, but the Democrats overwhelmingly outpaced their rivals.
The last time Democrats held such a large turnout advantage in a gubernatorial primary was in 2017, shortly after Donald Trump’s first election.
As other results from Tuesday night also show, Republicans appear to be taking a hit at the polls following Trump’s return to the national stage.
