Democrats Remain in Control Ahead of November’s Elections
Platner holds a substantial lead in Maine, while Mamdani, Sherrill, and Spanberger are all ahead in their respective races
With a flurry of new polling hitting the scene, from Maine to Virginia and everything in between, it’s time to take a quick look at how things are shaping up in each race.
Starting in Maine, where Graham Platner has been hit with a number of scandals in the past week and a half, from Reddit posts that included some unsavory language from years ago to the more recent tattoo controversy that shook his campaign.
The University of New Hampshire released a new primary poll in Maine that was conducted around the time the Reddit scandals broke, but ended on the day the tattoo story came out. Regardless, Platner holds a very wide early lead over the governor of the state, with 58% of Maine Democrats saying they would vote for Platner, while 24% say the same for Janet Mills.
Platner’s lead is strongest among younger respondents, earning 75% of those under 34 and 67% of those between 35 and 49. He also leads by large margins among self-identified socialists at 81% and progressives at 73%, while even winning over 57% of moderates.
Mills only leads among self-described Liberals at 44%, a slim four-point lead over Platner, while trailing her progressive opponent among those over 65. Though of course, subsamples in a poll of 510 can be small, so take these with a grain of salt.
Let’s take a look at the recent averages in the Virginia governor and attorney general races, the New Jersey governor race, and the New York City mayoral contest.
