Americans Unite Against Billionaire Influence
Voters across party lines say billionaire power has gone too far and demand higher taxes
Newly released polling from YouGov suggests Americans are none too happy with the gap between the richest and poorest in American society, and think that billionaires should be paying much more than they are right now.
Before that, the same survey found that 69 percent of Americans support raising the federal minimum wage to 15 dollars an hour, while only 18 percent oppose the idea. Support is naturally highest among Democrats at 91 percent, but even 69 percent of independents and just under half of Republicans support the idea.
Raising the federal minimum wage would be one of many steps needed to draw down the gap between the rich and poor in the United States, but taxing the billionaire class would also help in going a long way toward reaching that goal.
When asked whether they believe billionaires pay too much or too little in taxes, 64 percent of Americans said that the richest among them pay too little, while only 7 percent are willing to go to bat for the rich and say they currently pay too much.
Once again, Democrats were the most likely to say billionaires pay too little in taxes, with 85 percent agreeing, while another 65 percent of independents are also on side. Only 42 percent of Republicans think billionaires pay too little in taxes, while 33 percent say the amount they pay now is about right.
