Americans Say Trump Is Going Too Far In Expanding His Powers
Trump's handling of economic and legal issues are going over poorly with the American public
New polling from Ipsos for the Washington Post suggests that Trump’s approval on key issues continue to sink like a stone.
Trump’s highest net-approval remains on immigration, which the poll found at -7% (46% - 53%). The previous Ipsos/WaPo poll from February had Trump’s net-approval on immigration at +2% (50% - 48%)
His handling of the economy isn’t faring any better. In fact, Trump’s handling of the economy has hit a net low in Ipsos’ polling as it craters to -22% (39% - 61%).
Once again, the previous poll from February had Trump’s net-approval on the economy at -8% (45% - 53%). It was impressive that his handling of the economy had started to drop so early into his presidency, but after the massive swings in the stock market (thanks to his insane tariff strategy) it’s only tanked further with voters.
His net-approval on importing goods is at a whopping -30% (34% - 64%), showing just how small American’s appetite for radical changes in the economy really is. Likewise, voters peg Trump’s net approval at -36% (31% - 67%) when it comes to his handling of the recent turmoil in the stock market.
It’s safe to say many Americans give the President low marks for managing the market crisis, given the turmoil was caused almost entirely by the President with his “Liberation Day” tariffs.
This trend of Americans being pessimistic about the economy has continued under the Trump administration. When asked whether they thought the state of the US economy today was good or bad, 73% of Americans still view it negatively.
The share of Americans viewing the economy so poorly has remained practically unchanged since Covid restrictions came down in 2021. Where Americans hoped Trump would turn around the Biden economy, they’ve been faced with the reality that the poor economic situation is here to stay.
The economy is dragging the Trump administration down like an anvil attached to their feet. That is making their attempt at running roughshod over the legal system, and Americans rights and freedoms, that much harder.
Polling suggests Americans aren’t thrilled about the attempts by Trump at expanding the power of the Presidency.
