Americans Love Socialism, Just Don't Call It That

The public is ahead of political leaders on wages, taxes, and childcare, whether they admit it or not

Newly released polling from YouGov is shedding light on something I have long suspected about the American public; Americans tend to like socialist policies, they just do not like calling it socialism.

The survey asked a series of questions related to the newly inaugurated NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani and his policies, but applied them at a national level.

To start, only 32% of Americans say they would vote for a candidate who identifies as a Democratic Socialist. Another 42% say they would not, while 26% remain unsure.

Democrats once again show a strong willingness to move the party to the left, with 69% saying they would vote for a self-described democratic socialist. That compares to 27% of Independents and just 4% of Republicans.

Support for a democratic socialist candidate remains relatively consistent across age groups. Younger Americans are the most supportive at 36%, while those aged 45 to 64 are the least supportive at 29%. That said, younger Americans are far less likely to say they are outright opposed compared to older generations.

This brings us to the policies themselves, many of which enjoy broad public support despite clearly sitting on the left side of the political spectrum.

The first question asked Americans whether they support raising the minimum wage to $30 an hour by 2030. A majority of 55% say they support the proposal, while 32% oppose it.

Support stands at 81% among Democrats and 56% among Independents, with even 31% of Republicans backing the idea of a $30 minimum wage. Younger Americans are once again the most supportive at 68%, compared to just 42% among the oldest age group.
